Moshi and Arusha are the two centers for climbing Kilimanjaro. The lodges of the Arusha area are certainly more upscale.

Backpackers and budget climbers should focus on Moshi when looking for accommodation.

There are many excellent hotels/lodges near Arusha and Moshi. Choosing one depends on your budget and many other factors. When you are looking for a place to stay before or after climbing Kilimanjaro, you should be concerned about the following:

bullet

Safety - there are plenty of budget accommodations available. Many are unsafe with questionable security policies. The more upscale establishments have better security.

bullet

Money matters - climbers need access to currency exchange facilities. There are quite a few rustic lodges available but most are 30 min or more from the nearest bureau de change.  While you can exchange money at most lodges, their exchange rates are not the best, they may run out of money when you need it most, or you may have difficulty getting smaller bills for tips.

bullet

Shopping - climbers often need last-minute supplies. Batteries, hygiene products, snacks, etc. If you stay at a rustic lodge, the nearest supermarket will be at least 30 min away.

bullet

Facilities - some hotels have power problems and constant outages. This can be devastating if you need to charge your camera batteries the night before your climb. Laundry facilities especially after the climb is very important. After 2-3 days of traveling before reaching Kilimanjaro, and after 9 days on the mountain, many clients appreciate satellite TVs, telephones and internet cafes to catch up on world events before returning home or continuing on the next leg of their vacations.

bullet

Comfort - after many days of traveling before the climb, and after returning from 9 days on the mountain it is crucial to have hot water, safe food and water, comfortable and clean beds and quiet surroundings. Some cheap hotels are very noisy with budget travelers coming and going throughout the day and night.  Some outfitters use tented camps; we think that's way too much camping for this trip!

Please plan to arrive at least 2 nights before your climb. This will allow you to settle down and will give us time to check your gear and show you around!
