Kilimanjaro Guides The role of a guide on Kilimanjaro is different from what you may expect. The paths or trails to the summit are well marked (with stone and rock pillars) and well used! And with so many people on the mountain, you have to be really stupid or unlucky to get lost! In bad weather or in the dark, the situation changes dramatically. Even experienced guides can get disoriented especially since they don't have navigation equipment. When everything is fine one can argue that the merits of using a good guide is overrated. We hear this often from reckless climbers in their internet trip reports or in the bars after the climb. They would brag about negotiating cheap climbs and how easy it was to reach the summit (at least from a navigation point of view) and that they hardly needed the guides along the way. For every uneventful climb, there are many that require decisions by the guide and a few can end tragically if the guides make wrong decisions. Every year, climbers die on Kilimanjaro and many of these could've been avoided if the guides were more experienced. In experienced guides can also put their team in danger - there are no statistics on porter deaths, but we know that many porters die on the mountain every year. A mountain guide has to take care of himself, his clients, his crew and the mountain. This is no easy task, considering how tough Kilimanjaro can be on the mind and body. Kiliwarrior guides are the best! But don't take our word for it; please read our testimonials!
