Our
3 & 4-day itineraries visit the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara.
Highlights:
 |
The famous volcanic Ngorongoro

Zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly the best place to see
black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the
magnificent black-maned males. There are lots of colorful flamingoes and a
variety of other water birds around the soda lake on the crater floor.
More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found
in the crater. Other game often seen include: leopard, cheetah, hyena,
elephant, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and more!

Where exactly do we go and what can you expect to see?
It
depends on the time of year.
The
Serengeti Tented Camps are mobile and move between the central and
southern Serengeti as it follows the Wildebeest Migration during the
months of December to June.
From
July to November, the Migration is in the northern Serengeti or Masai Mara
- out of reach of our standard 5-day safari itinerary. During these dry
months the Tarangire River in Tarangire National park is is an oasis
for thirsty animals and Oliver's Camp is the perfect safari home in the
bush! If you want to visit the Serengeti, please sign up for a
custom private safari.
What is included?
Park
and entry fees, driver/guide salary, all meals, accommodation, one
liter of bottled water per day.
Not included?
Laundry,
tips, drinks, items of personal nature. Note - these are included at
5 star properties.
What about singles?
Our
rates are based on a minimum of two people sharing! Unfortunately the
safari lodges and camps charge extra for single rooms and we have to do
the same. We don't think strangers should share rooms - so we negotiated
very low single surcharges.

Volcanoes National park was opened in the year of 1925 (initially as part
of the first National park in Africa: Albert National park) and it was
created with the major aim of protecting the endangered Mountain Gorillas.
The
park is located in a chain of dormant Volcanoes called Ibirunga in the
northwest of the Country. The volcanoes include Muhabura, Gahinga,
Sabyinyo, Bisoke and Karisimbi. The park lies within the provinces of
Gisenyi (15%) and Ruhengeri (85%) a long the boarder of the Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda and is part of the Albertine or western
Rift. It is surrounded by the districts of Bukamba, Kinigi, Mutobo, Buhoma,
(of Ruhengeri province) and Mutara (of Gisenyi province).
The
Park is continuous with other two parks in the neighboring Countries;
Virunga National Park in DRC and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda;
and the three compose the ecosystem of Virunga Massif.
The
Mountain Gorillas’ survival today thanks to Diana Fossey’s research that
was buried at her research center in the Virunga’s alongside the Animals
to which she dedicated her life. Fossey became a household name following
the release of the biographical film gorillas in the mist, set and short
on location in the Volcanoes National Park. Critical and public acclaim
ensured that gorillas in the mist al so served to raise International
awareness of the plight of the Mountain Gorillas.
A mere
300 of these gentle giants survive in the world, half of them resident in
Rwanda, where your habituated groups ranging in size from 8-38
individuals-can be visited by a limited amount of tourists daily.
Gorilla groups tend to
move around a lot and their home ranges often overlap. For this reason,
one group cannot be said to be easier to track than another.
For up to five years
each, these groups have undergone an extremely delicate process that has
gradually made them used to the presence of humans, and allowed a few
privileged visitors to interact with them briefly in the wild.
The gorillas are by no
means tame. They are completely wild animals, which even now tolerate
human presence for an hour a day at most. Experienced guides will
accompany you on your tracking, many of who have been involved in the
habituation process themselves. These guides will brief you in detail on
your arrival on the various aspects of ‘gorilla etiquette’, but the
information contained in this set of guidelines is to help you arrive for
your track well prepared and ready to enjoy this unique opportunity to the
full.
Gorilla tracking is a
year-round activity, with no season as such. The rain forest is moist, and
it rains very often, even in the dry season. Tracking commences every
morning from the park headquarters at 8:30 AM. You sign a register upon
arrival with the idea to randomly assign groups to gorilla families.
However, this process is not completely random as you will notice how
older people somehow “get assigned” to the nearest gorilla families. There
is a daily maximum of 8 visitors to each gorilla group, and each group is
accompanied by a guide, rangers and optional porters who will carry your
shoulder pack for you. The guide will travel with your group to the
trailhead where the walking starts. It is not a long drive in most cases.
The gorillas cover large distances overnight, and they are never
constantly in one area. The guides will use their knowledge of the
gorillas’ habits and information from the previous day to locate the
group’s whereabouts.
Because of this, the
time taken to track the gorillas varies enormously, from as little as half
an hour to as much as 9 hours before returning to camp. The terrain can
be extremely difficult, which steep slopes (often steeper than a flight of
stairs) covered in dense vegetation that gives the park its name. In
addition, the altitude of 5200 feet and more means participants do need to
be physically fit to enjoy the track.
Once the gorillas are
located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them.
After this, you will return to the park headquarters and your camp.
